School is the important stage of anyone’s life. When parents send their children to school, they dream of the best establishment, with the highest educational rating, professional teachers, and a wide choice of additional faculties that allow one to choose their future career. However, the reality is that in many schools, children face abuses, harassment, and bullying. One should investigate the problem to find the answer to the question how schools in the USA can stop bullying, and one of such solutions is anti-bullying programs.
Bullying is an aggressive persecution of one of the members of the collective, especially schoolchildren and students, by other members of the team or a part of it. Any child can become a victim of bullying regardless of how strong or capable they are. More often, the most noticeable individuals become the victims due to their peculiarities such as strange behavior, clothes, and looks. Children with problems in their families are also in the risk group. At the same time, bullies are more often those who have no prohibitions and feel no authority of parents while growing up. Nevertheless, they still lack the attention and respect of adults. Many of these children have vividly expressed narcissistic traits. They have to assert themselves through other people all the time in order to prove their own superiority. For this purpose, they use harassment both in physical (beatings, damage to property of the victim) and psychological (threats, ridicule, slander, or isolation) forms.
In the USA, one of four children aged 12 to 18 years is a victim of bullying. Its consequences can be rather destructive. The awareness of this problem did not come at once. Society began to pay attention to it only after some significant tragedies in Columbine, Colorado, and Oaklyn, NJ (Bitman). A silly joke can grow into a serious harassment with grave consequences. Victims of bullying skip school, stop learning, and their childhood sufferings leave a harmful imprint on their adult life. Quite often, bullying victims are more likely to become sick and have psychological problems. Some of them commit suicide.
After some significant incidents that had shaken society, an anti-bullying program has started to function in American schools. This program became the first official way to fight harassment in educational institutions. The important part in it belongs to counselors and the teaching staff. They have their own departments and lessons that include conversations, a role playing of certain situations, and the discussions of topical questions. Counselors and social workers observe students and read files with information on each student, subsequently marking their problems, strong points, and weaknesses (Walsh-Sarnecki). In schools, every student has an opportunity to tell about their problem by writing it and putting in a special box so that the school staff could be aware of the problems of their students.
The most difficult time for the prevention of bullying is during the middle school. This period of development is connected with the onset of adolescence (Pomerance Birl). Teacher often mention that it is rather difficult to pay enough attention to hundreds of pupils and to find the problem within. However, children should not try to solve the situation on their own since it is not always possible to find a common language with a bully. It is advisable to speak to parents, teachers, or elders, those individuals whom the child trusts. Children will find it easier to deal with their school problems if they have their parents’ support. They should also turn to school teachers and draw their attention to this problem. In the most critical situation, police should be involved or one might even think about changing the place of study.
Bullying has always been a serious problem in schools throughout the world. Such a behavior lowers the child’s self-esteem and prevents the further development of personality. Even the slightest manifestation of persecution or harassment should not be unnoticeable. The situation can be dealt only with joint efforts of the school staff, parents, and society in general, which is why special anti-bullying programs should be implemented in all schools.
