It helps in making your pose trouble-free so that you can start your yoga practice with less pressure.
If you cannot forward bend your torso (or equivalently cannot straighten your knee) sufficiently enough to catch hold of your toes; or if you cannot bend backwards sufficiently, then strap can be used to wrap on your toes and on the other side held in your hand to make up for the deficit. This can actually be quite significant because otherwise you may never stretch your muscles completely since you are not able to get into the pose as such with correct posture.
Another way is to use the strap for stretching muscles of the shoulder in which the strap is held in outstretched hands at different angles which work the different heads of the deltoids (shoulder muscles).
Using a yoga strap is a great way to help you stretch and keep body in tight alighnment you should use it as long as possible if it gives you right alighnment and a good stretch. There is no rule in yoga that using a yoga strap means you are not advanced or behind or a beginner. You can use a yoga strap at any stage of your yoga life as our bodies are all different and will be different than anyone elses.
