I can't knock twice. It's not so easy to knock once, but it's hard to knock twice. A popular saying that we often encounter in the horror genre and indirectly in film is that knocking once means death and knocking twice means coming. And of course, this is a classic twist of words often used by suspenseful writers and directors throughout literature and cinema history.This phrase has been used as an effective tool for those who want audiences to be on edge during those intense moments of suspense. We all know how scary it can be waiting for something bad to happen, like someone having a conversation with their partner or getting out of bed only to find the monster standing behind you... and then it happens.But people tend to forget that this is a line from a famous horror movie, and as such, it has been used over and over again since the 70s. We're talking about Rosemary's Baby (1968) and The Shining (1980). Both these classics used the same gag: the hero's apartment door knocks once and then twice, and nothing else happens. All we hear is... nothing. But we all know what we expect to happen after those knocks: bad things will happen; very bad things will happen. And the tension needs to be broken once in a while, so these movies use the "knock twice" gag to create that effect.But what about Don't Knock Twice? Is this movie any different?Well, to be honest, it's not all that different compared to other horror movies. The woman in this story has her daughter possessed by an evil witch (or something like that). She goes out on a quest to save her daughter and comes across this ritual which she must perform if she wants to save her child. And of course, the ritual requires knocking on the door twice (like the one in Rosemary's Baby) and then something bad will happen... or maybe nothing at all. What the movie also has is the same thing we see in other horror movies: a tension-breaking scene where we're invited to laugh at something that was supposed to be frightening. The witch standing by the bed (with her eyes open and glowing like a demon) should be scary, but instead, we get a visual gag - one of those "oh my god" moments - and our brains associate it with something horrifying, not funny.But enough about horror movies and back to Don't Knock Twice . As you've probably guessed by now, there's no suspense here: it's just a movie about knocking. And even if some parts are not that bad, it's not enough to keep the whole thing afloat. The acting is poor, the characters are dull - there's nothing special about them. They're just another group of people living normal lives until they experience some supernatural/paranormal activity that will shake their lives forever.And if you haven't figured out what this is all about by now, I can assure you that there will be no surprises in store for you. Yes, there's a surprise at the end of the movie... but since it's predictable from the very beginning of Don't Knock Twice , you won't be surprised at all.
