I am ashamed to admit that this is my first contact with the Pandemic system. In my entire career in board games, we have never been able to get to know each other. Inspired by the leitmotif, that is, the game World of Warcraft and an attempt to finally resist the well-known and very popular mechanics, I ordered this game for review. An atmospheric box of medium size has a lot of well-made elements inside. These include a fairly large board with landscapes of Azeroth, a lot of canvas maps with lots of interesting illustrations, large hero boards and mission maps, as well as several cardboard and plastic markers. However, most of all I was struck by the figures of heroes and executions. It includes ghouls, abominations, and a large statue of the Lich King. In addition, cardboard strongholds and a citadel. Everything is a single whole and looks great during games.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is a game that usually takes a little longer to prepare for than other board games. Here we are dealing with a rather annoying setup that slightly increases the time it takes to play. However, if we manage to start the game after we have selected one of the several available difficulty levels and have chosen the hero we will play with, we will have quite a lot of fun on the board. The gameplay is mainly based on moving around the map of Azeroth with our heroes, performing mechanically very simple tasks and constantly fighting the plague, which is constantly spreading in various parts of the map. Completing tasks is based on randomness resulting from dice rolls and on the symbols that appear on the cards in our hand. This is a very simple system that disappointed my expectations a bit. Our main goal in the game is to complete 3 tasks in 3 areas on the board. This will give us access to the final quest, which is actually a slightly longer version of one of the quests. Unfortunately, the epic battle with the Lich King, which I was counting on from the very beginning, we will not witness here.
Fortunately, another gameplay element changed my observations a little. Namely, the system of spreading the plague on the map. On their turn, players can move, fight, complete a quest, teleport to the fortress and rest to restore health. After each turn, we will add new cards from the common deck to the hand. There are common plague maps, because of which more and more new ghouls will appear on the map. After each player's turn, we must take new plague cards that will mark the places where new enemy units appear. We must try to prevent a situation when a new ghoul appears in a place where 3 more ghouls are already placed. However, if this happens, an enemy invasion will begin. An Abomination appears on the map, which is stronger than ghouls, can move around the map towards the heroes and attack them. Each raid and each death of a hero promotes a special marker on the scale of despair. If at the end, then we lose. Our failure may also be due to the lack of cards in the hero deck, so here time is working against us.
