GSTN Advisory To Taxpayers: The Timely Filing of GST Returns

The goods & services tax network issued an advisory on 4th May 2023 on the context of timely filing of GST returns.

It is observed that the certain individuals who pay taxes have encountered challenges in submitting their GSTR-3B for the March 2023 period by April 20th of the same year.

Upon investigating the matter, it was discovered that a significant number of taxpayers tried to file their GSTR-3B returns during the latter half of the final day (20.05 lakh returns were filed on that day). This led to a backlog in the GST system, resulting in some taxpayers experiencing inconvenience.

Approximately 45% of the returns that were submitted on April 20, 2023, were either NIL returns (meaning there was no tax liability or input tax credit availed) or were returns in which no tax was paid in cash.

These types of returns could have been filed earlier, without waiting until the last day. To facilitate the process and reduce the backlog in the GST system, taxpayers are encouraged to use the SMS filing option for NIL returns, as it is faster and more convenient. It is recommended that taxpayers file their Form GSTR-3B well in advance to avoid the rush on the last day.

Additionally, it has come to notice that certain taxpayers are uploading a substantial number of invoices (up to 27 lakhs) from previous periods in a single GSTR-1 on the due date of filing.

To prevent causing delays in the GST system, taxpayers are advised to develop a discipline of filing monthly returns for all B2B invoices and refrain from reporting previous period invoices in a single go. Such a practice can adversely impact the waiting time in the queue on the GST system.

Therefore, it is evident that if taxpayers improve their planning of return filing, they can prevent the challenges caused by the last-minute rush and assist their fellow taxpayers. It is worth mentioning that GSTN has made significant improvements to its infrastructure over time.

Summing it up, By submitting GST returns promptly, taxpayers can not only prevent last-minute complications but also guarantee a hassle-free experience for all parties concerned. By following the advisory issued by GSTN, taxpayers can contribute to a more effective and efficient return filing process, utilizing the upgraded infrastructure of the GSTN to its full potential.
